If you’re anything like me, you probably spend a great deal of your day wondering what it would be like to be a duck. What choices would you make? What new opportunities would be opened to you? And of course, what kind of hat would you wear?
You begin the game by choosing one of three possible choices. Do you want to embark on an epic journey, hone your mind through education, or simply sit back and enjoy the simple things? The game is entirely made up of choices like these, and each diverging path will lead your duck down a very different road.
The experiences, trials and lessons that your duck undergoes are extremely varied. Sometimes they even feel a little bit too much like your own life.
Eventually, the path you choose will lead to an end to the story. There are some really feel-good endings, and others that aren’t so great. Some of the outcomes you’ll see get pretty intense. Whether that’s a good or a bad thing is really up to you.
But don’t worry; after each ending, you get the chance to try other choices! Many of the paths link together in some way, and you’ll soon find many doors being opened for you which you would never have anticipated.
With so many endings to find, achievements to unlock, and even fun hats to wear, A Duck Has An Adventure identifies as, and markets itself as, a game. Really, it’s a bit more than that. It’s story, it’s art, it’s a “hypercomic,” it’s adorable and hilarious from beginning to end.
This game will always be one of my favourites, and it doesn’t take long to play. Reach inside and let your inner mallard out. Quack, quack!
